The
America's Boating Course (ABC) is sponsored by the United States
Power Squadrons. The course is approved by the National Association
of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA), and is accepted by
almost all states to meet boating license or safety certification
requirements. These states recognize ABC as meeting their education
requirements. The text book contains five chapters. The course
material which addresses the requirements for NASBLA are contained
within Chapters 1 through 4. These four chapters covers address:
- General
information about boats and maintenance
- Information to make your boating experience safer and more comfortable
- Tips on being a more courteous boat operator
- Laws and regulations to which you must adhere
The
purpose of America's Boating Course is to teach introductory
safe boating techniques. Chapter five in this text book is an
Introduction to Navigation. It is not required for boater certification
but is included to give a taste of coastal navigation to the
novice boater. If the student decided to pursue further education
in the skill of navigation, membership to the USPS is available
and, as members, they would be offered advanced courses.
Qualified,
enthusiastic, and experienced USPS instructors will provide ABC
student support as a civic service. They will provide state specific
information that the student is expected to know.
While
the content of the ABC student manual serves as the basis for
this course, it will also serve as a reference book in basic
boating long after the course work is completed. USPS believes
that the more educated a boater becomes, the more likely that
boater will be a safe boater.
